Naturalist For Hire

Plant and tree identification walks on public lands or your personal property. You’ll learn the names of local plants and fungi as you explore their native habitats. Whether you’re a “plant person” or not, our walk will leave you feeling more connected to the natural world around you.

Nature enchants us as children and lately more adults are seeking to familiarize themselves with native plants in their geographic regions. It wasn’t that long ago that people had to know how to identify wild plants to survive. Going into nature to meet the local flora and fungi lifts the veil between you and your ancestors. Reach out to schedule a naturalist walk, and rest assured that by the end of our time together, you’ll be feeling more confident and inspired by the seasonal abundance surrounding you.

$50.00 per hour. 1.5 hour minimum, Venmo accepted, cash preferred.

Sustainable Garden and Permaculture Consultation

Trudging through your yard draging hoses, spending money on plants only to have them die a week after you plant them feels defeating. Understanding the backyard ecosystems at play will help you cultivate a biodiverse garden the allows you to use water and time efficiently.

I’ll take the time to understand your landscape goals, explore your property with you, and identify various microclimates and existing plants the already make it home. Tothether we’ll address issues you’ve had, problem solving with native plants and perennials, soil health and sun exposure. My goal is to help you plan out a low maintenance, semi-wild space that you can relax and enjoy with friends and family.

Gardening with a climate-forward mentality, while planting food and medicine for everyBody.

$70.00 per hour. Two hour minimum, Venmo accepted, cash preferred.

FAQs

Do you offer landscape services?

No. In the “About” section of this website you’ll see my background as an environmental educator and work in the community mental health sector. I think that our growing disconnection with the natural world impacts both adults and kids and I’m tackling that issue one person at a time. Digging in the dirt alongside you I can teach self-reliance skills and boost your confidence. I’ll work with you to create a plan and hold your hand as you learn to “plantscape” for the future.

Where do you operate?

Astoria, Oregon and surrounding communities in Clatsop County. Services 10 miles and greater outside of Astoria city limits will include an additional small travel fee. Especially when bringing our small herd of Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Occasionally I cross the Columbia River into our neighboring Washington communities, however I consider myself to be a hyper-local environmental educator and like to stay within my bioregion. All of my work takes place on unceded Clatsop/Chinook land.

What books do you recommend I buy?

Part of my service includes bringing our extensive collection of field guides, horticulture & medicinal herb books, backyard farm and garden books for you to peruse to decide which to order. Not everyones brain works the same, I do this so that you can see which ones will be best for you before you order them. I also provide several handouts and resource guides for you to keep. The Astoria Public Library has a Horticulture Section that has books on sustainable gardening, different types of plants, and composting. The Seaside Public Library has a vast section devoted to homesteading, livestock care, and living off the land.
